How much electricity does a TV use?

A TV that draws e.g. 80 W uses 0.08 kWh per hour of viewing, about 0.08 PLN. At 4 hours a day that is about 117 kWh and about 122 PLN a year, about 10 PLN a month.

kWh/yr = W × h/day × 365 ÷ 1000
kWh/yr = kWh per cycle × cycles per week × 52
cost = kWh/yr × price of 1 kWh

An estimate. Fixed charges on the bill are not included. Appliances with a thermostat (fridge, oven, water heater) draw full power only part of the time, so label data works better for them.

Where to check your TV's power

A TV energy label gives the use in kWh per 1000 hours of viewing, separately for SDR and HDR pictures. That number is the average power in watts: 80 kWh per 1000 h means 80 W. In HDR and at high brightness the TV draws more.

Big screens and standby

A TV drawing e.g. 150 W for the same 4 hours a day uses about 219 kWh and costs about 228 PLN a year.

Standby comes on top: the TV, set-top box and a games console with an indicator light draw power when off. The calculator counts standby separately, in the whole-house view.
