How much electricity does an electric kettle use?

Boiling about 1 litre of water uses about 0.1 kWh of electricity, about 0.10 PLN at 1.04 PLN/kWh. Four such boils a day add up to about 146 kWh and about 152 PLN a year, about 13 PLN a month.

Boiling 1 litre of water uses about 0.1 kWh. A more powerful kettle boils faster but uses the same energy.

An estimate. Fixed charges on the bill are not included. Appliances with a thermostat (fridge, oven, water heater) draw full power only part of the time, so label data works better for them.

Ready-made calculations

Where 0.1 kWh per litre comes from

Heating 1 kg of water by 1°C takes 4.19 kJ. Tap water at 15°C needs 4.19 kJ × 85 K = 356 kJ to boil, about 0.099 kWh. The kettle loses some heat on the way, so in practice it is a little more.

A more powerful kettle boils faster but does not change the amount of energy. It boils a litre sooner and uses about the same.

How to use less with a kettle

Boil only as much water as you need. Every extra litre is about 0.1 kWh: boiling one litre too much every day adds about 37 kWh, about 38 PLN a year. Limescale on the element slows boiling, so descale the kettle regularly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to boil water in a kettle?

Boiling about 1 litre of water uses about 0.1 kWh, about 0.10 PLN at 1.04 PLN/kWh. A full kettle costs proportionally more.

Does a kettle use a lot of electricity?

It has high power but runs for a few minutes. With four boils a day it uses about 146 kWh a year, less than a fridge labelled 250 kWh.
