How much electricity does a fridge use?

A fridge-freezer labelled 250 kWh a year uses about 0.68 kWh of electricity a day on average. At 1.04 PLN/kWh that is about 260 PLN a year and about 22 PLN a month. Enter the number from your label and the calculator works out the cost.

The yearly use in kWh is on the energy label. Measure an old fridge with a plug-in energy meter for at least 24 hours.

An estimate. Fixed charges on the bill are not included. Appliances with a thermostat (fridge, oven, water heater) draw full power only part of the time, so label data works better for them.

Where to find your fridge's consumption

The yearly use in kWh is on the energy label, and the QR code on the label leads to the model sheet in the EU EPREL database. A fridge runs in cycles: the compressor switches on and off, so the rated power times 24 hours would give far too high a result.

Measure an older fridge without a label with a plug-in energy meter for at least 24 hours and multiply the result by 365. Use rises in summer and when the door is opened often.

When replacing a fridge pays off

Example: an old fridge uses 450 kWh a year, about 468 PLN. A new one labelled 200 kWh costs about 208 PLN in electricity, so the difference is about 260 PLN a year. If the new fridge costs e.g. 2,500 PLN, it pays for itself after about 9.6 years.

Replacing a working fridge just to save money pays back slowly. When the old one needs a repair anyway, only the difference in use counts.

Frequently asked questions

How many kWh a day does a fridge use?

A fridge-freezer labelled 250 kWh a year uses about 0.68 kWh a day on average, about 0.71 PLN at 1.04 PLN/kWh.

How much does a fridge cost per month?

At 250 kWh a year and 1.04 PLN/kWh, about 22 PLN a month. An old fridge using 450 kWh a year costs about 39 PLN a month.

Can I calculate a fridge from its rated power?

You can, but the result will be too high because the compressor does not run all the time. Enter the yearly use from the label or measure the fridge for 24 hours.
